Best Public Pools in Pittsburgh

Now that Memorial Day has passed, we have summer on the mind and there’s nothing that says “Summer” more than taking a dip in a refreshing swimming pool.

Luckily, you don’t need a private club membership or backyard pool to enjoy a dive in the deep end. 

All throughout the greater Pittsburgh area there are many stellar public pool options that allow residents from the region to drop-in without a membership.

Avonworth Community Pool

Avonworth Community Pool is a premiere aquatic facility located on the border of Kilbuck and Ohio Townships in Pennsylvania (about five miles north of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania).  Built in 1967, the aquatic facility now is now home to: a 300,000 gallon public swimming  pool; a 5,000 gallon wading pool; the “Lope Slope” Slide; some of freshest hot dogs around courtesy of our friendly staff at the “Snack Shack.”  Stop by and visit us on the Pool Deck this Summer! Venture on up Route 79 north to the Cranberry Twp. Community Pool for an extraordinary water excursion including an exotic slide of curving tubes. Children may frolic in the kiddie pool, which is shaded by flowered spray fountains or a sandy play area to build sand castles. Umbrellas are available for sun protection, and then relax or make a trip to the snack bar for food and drinks. There is a grass area to lounge before taking another refreshing dip into the sparkling pool.

Wave Pools

Allegheny County operates three wave pools for residents to enjoy throughout the summer. These pools are located at Settlers Cabin Park in Robinson, South Park in the South Hills and Boyce Park in Monroeville.

Located in the Recreation Center complex just off Cedar Boulevard in Mt. Lebanon Park, Mt. Lebanon’s 50-meter outdoor Swim Center offers lap swimming and recreational swimming for people of all ages. The swim center was completely renovated in 2014 with a new bathhouse, family changing rooms, pool heater, zero depth leisure pool, double slide tower, spray features, 50-meter lap lanes, poolside rock climbing wall and a snack bar.

Crawford Pool is a community pool in Shaler Township located at Kiwanis Park. The Pool features diving boards, a water slide and baby pool area. There’s also a fully-stocked snack bar and locker rooms with showers and changing rooms. The pool also offers swimming lessons, fitness classes and a swim team. Rates for entry are for residents and non-residents of Shaler Township. There are also season passes available.

Schenley Park plays an important part in the Citiparks outdoor swimming season, and there are activities, programs and water carnivals that make for interesting ways to use the park. The swimming program provides opportunities to participate in lessons, water aerobics and even join the competitive swim teams. Swimming will open in June, but the park offers a chance to enjoy the beautiful scenery or walk, hike or bike throughout the park. Part of the process of participating in the Citiparks swimming program is the chance to join learn-to-swim programs to encourage the joy and exercise benefits of swimming.

North Park Pool is part of the Allegheny County Park Department and the resources for activities are a vital part of the enjoyment for an overall exciting adventure for all ages. If you’re looking for a unique aquatic experience, swim on over to one of the largest pools in western Pennsylvania, which is located off Banksville Road. There is a water slide, fountain, grass relaxation areas and a snack bar. There are seasonal and individual passes and swimming lessons available. Dormont Pool has various water depth levels that will accommodate all swimming levels. The expansive pool area ensures there is enough water space for a refreshing plunge and a swimming to-do list during the sweltering days of summer.

There is an Olympic-size pool and a children’s pool area with a comforting sprinkler to accommodate all needs of the family.
